The new jobs will be added as Xiaomi aims to expand its operations in India. Xiaomi is looking to up its ante in the South Asian market in order to counter the growing onslaught of the two titans in the smartphone industry, Samsung and Apple. Lei Jun, who is Xiaomi’s founder, chairman, and CEO, is on a week-long visit to India. He recently called on the Prime Minister to ensure that the smartphone major’s plans were in sync with the PM’s dreams. Lei Jun also spoke to the PM about how Xiaomi had progressed in the country and how smartphones were impacting the country. A company spokesperson also stated that a Make in India discussion had also taken place between the two men. Xiaomi looks forward to expanded ops in India Lei Jun then proceeded to discuss Xiaomi India’s plans to manufacture Xiaomi’s products in India for the world. Mr. Jun also presented the PM a Made-In-India Xiaomi Redmi 4A, which goes on sale today. All of the components of the smartphone were displayed in a transparent glass box. Lei Jun then met the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as well as the Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad. These ministries will play a crucial role in ensuring that the infamous license raj does not disrupt Xiaomi India’s dreams. In a statement to the media, Xiaomi India also recently announced the inauguration of a second manufacturing plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The statement went on to add that there were plans to add an additional 20,000 jobs in the country “in the next three years.” The same statement also emphasized the renewed importance which Xiaomi now accorded the Indian market. “India is now the most important market outside of China for Xiaomi, and is a harbinger of the company’s global expansion plans.” Xiaomi India has achieved a sales revenue of over $1 billion in the soon-to-be-concluded financial year.
