Australian Open 2017 Day 2: Djokovic, Serena Snatch Victories Down Under as Australian Open Day 2 Comes To An End

Australian Open 2017: It was sunny skies in Melbourne as Day 2 of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year went underway and the day turned out moderately eventful and predictable in terms of results of the matches played. And perhaps one of the highlights of the day was defending champion Novak Djokovic‘s first-round title defence against Fernando Verdasco. The Serbian former World No. 1 lifted when he most needed to on Tuesday night, holding off Fernando Verdasco in a 71-minute, momentum-swinging second set before winning 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Former World Number 1 Novak Djokovic cruised into the second round of the Australian Open and will have his eyes set on the title this time for sure.

On a day when the temperature reached almost 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit), No. 11 David Goffin was pushed all the way before beating 19-year-old qualifier Reilly Opelka, making his Grand Slam debut, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Third-seeded Milos Raonic, who reached the semi-finals in Australia last year and the final at Wimbledon, opened with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over Dustin Brown. Another Former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who came back from wrist injury had a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Florian Mayer to go one better than he did last year in Australia. Also advancing on the men’s front were No. 8 Dominic Thiem, No. 13 Roberto Bautista Agut, No. 15 Grigor Dimitrov, No. 18 Richard Gasquet, No. 24 Alexander Zverev, No. 25 Gilles Simon, and No. 32 Philipp Kohlschreiber.

On the woman’s front, six-time Champion Serena Williams had a tough matchup in her first round game but eventually emerged victorious 6-4, 6-3 over Belinda Bencic to continue her quest for a 23rd Grand Slam title. Daria Gavrilova has come through an exceptionally tense opening-round match against Naomi Broady to advance to the second round of Australian Open 2017 winning 3-6 6-4 7-5. US. Open finalist Karolina Pliskova following her title win at the Brisbane International with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo. Johanna Konta, a surprise semi-finalist in her debut at the Australian Open last year, won the Sydney International last week and opened here with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens.

Also progressing to the second round in the women’s division were  No. 14 Elena Vesnina, No. 21 Caroline Garcia, No 28 Alize Cornet, No. 30 Ekaterina Makarova, No. 31 Yulia Putintseva and Naomi Osaka, who beat Thai wild-card entry Luksika Kumkhum 6-7 (2), 6-4, 7-5.
