India finished second in the standings vastly because Great Britain and Belgium drew 3-3 in their final group league match. Great Britain needed to win the match where Belgium needed to win by a considerable margin to qualify for the gold medal match of the tournament. However, the match ended 3-3 following a remarkable fight back from the Great Britain Hockey team as they managed to come back from 1-3 down to draw the match eventually. India’s fate depended on the result of the match as the team lost to Australia 2-4 in their final group league encounter. Now the Indian team has got the perfect opportunity to take revenge against the Aussies and win the gold medal for the country. It is for the very first time that India has earned a chance to play in the final of Hockey Champions Trophy, and its earlier best result was only a bronze medal in the 1982 Champions Trophy played in Netherlands. Now in the final bronze medal match will be played between Germany and Great Britain, where India will be fighting against the Australia for the ultimate prize i.e. the Gold Medal of the tournament. It should be mentioned here that Belgium and Korea will be playing for 5th place spot too. Stay tuned to get all the updates right here at Fabnewz.
